Keeping Pet Chickens is a course that is designed for anyone thinking of keeping chickens at home, re-homing hens, or for those who already have some, and would like to learn the best practices of domestic poultry keeping. You will be able to handle chickens, and learn about which chickens are best for you, and your needs.

This hands-on all day workshop will cover the many aspects of keeping pet chickens at home. You will look at sourcing your hens, preparing for them, initial set-up costs, housing, feeding, and maintenance. You will also learn about the handling of the hens, and will be able to practice this on the day. The workshop will also look at common behavioural issues that arise and the physical requirements to keep your hens happy and healthy and producing free range eggs for you to enjoy. The session will also cover what to do if your chicken falls ill, how to treat minor ailments and the specialist veterinary care that is available for your chickens. Finally, the course will cover what to do if your hen dies or has to be put to sleep and how to dispose of her safely and legally.

This course is for anyone who keeps chickens on domestic scale or would like to. This workshop will cover all aspects of poultry keeping, and the hands on element will add experience and practice to the workshop.

Please wear suitable clothing for the conditions, and in anticipation of handling the hens. Please also bring a packed lunch with you, and refreshment.
